Songs Of A Lost World by The Cure

The first time my ears were exposed to The Cure, the goth rock gods here at #15, was when I first heard “Lullaby,” from their genre-defining 1989 album Disintegration. The 45 had been added to the jukebox at the Pizza Hut I worked at (at the request of my coworker and friend, Matt Leland) when I was 16 years old (so therefore this was likely sometime in the summer of 1990 — 34+ years ago), in rural Oklahoma. The internet wasn’t yet available, and I didn’t have cable (aka no MTV), so in my own defense as to why I came to The Cure so late: I had no legitimate way to hear any music outside of what limited music was being played for me on classic rock station KMOD 97.5 FM. By introducing me to The Cure in this way, at this impressionable time of my life, my friend Matt had inadvertently shifted the course of time my musical tastes forever.

That fall (November 1990) I purchased Mixed Up, a collection of remixes, acting as a “greatest hits” and opening for me the door to The Cure’s extended back catalog of wonderful songs. From that point I was hooked. In the following 18 years, the band released only five new albums, to ever-middling results, never able to match the majesty of Disintegration or anything from the seven albums that preceded it. I don’t know that I ever listened to 2008’s 4:13 Dream, the last album they released until the unbelievably good Songs of a Lost World came out a full 16 years later.

I could have happily listened to The Cure’s 1979-1990 catalog (plus a few singles from the later years) for the rest of my life. I didn’t need or expect any new music from the band in 2024, and I certainly didn’t expect that it would be this great. But great it is, and there’s word that even more is coming (a companion album has been hinted to come out later this year, before the band embarks on another world tour in support of it).

Songs of a Lost World evokes the same feelings the 16 year old me felt back in 1990, listening to Disintegration. The albums are very similar, and that connection is definitely intentional, despite the 35 years that have passed between them. Hit play on the video above, “A Fragile Thing (Radio 2 In Concert),” and you’ll hear that Smith’s voice and the band’s sound has not aged a day – to great effect. (The same cannot be said for Smith’s appearance – the man looks like a bloated Mrs. Potato Head that’s been bleached white from sitting atop the dump pile for far too long). When the album launched on November 1 (intentionally on the day after Halloween, at lead singer / songwriter Robert Smith’s insistence), the band performed and broadcast a three-hour live stream for all to see. They came out on London’s Troxy stage to the sounds of a dreary thunderous rainstorm, played all eight songs from the new album, took a short break and then returned to play 23 more songs from the rest of their catalog. They’ve released those first eight songs of the performance as a live album, Songs of a Live World: Troxy London MMXXIV. It is a tour de force.

Songs of a Lost World marks the first album since 1985’s The Head on the Door that was composed solely by Smith. His voice, his guitar, his orchestration, his songs – The Cure is Robert Smith, but he did not play all the instruments. Smith is the only original member of the band, but note that bassist Simon Gallup has only missed inclusion on two of their 14 studio albums. The current band lineup, as represented on the album and in the stage band, is Smith, Gallup, Reeves Gabrels on second guitar (since 2012), Roger O’Donnell on keyboards (since 1987), Perry Bamonte on keyboards (since 1990), and Jason Cooper on drums (since 1995). That’s a lot of old dudes making great music.

My head keeps wanting to draw a parallel to any other band that has enjoyed the history The Cure has. Songs came out 45 years after The Cure’s 1979 debut, Three Imaginary Boys. When The Rolling Stones, for instance, released their 2005 album, A Bigger Bang, which would have been 41 years after their debut self-titled 1964 album, was the reception as big for it by fans of the entire Stones catalog as was the reception for The Cure? I have no real frame of reference, no way to know for sure.

But it does feel as though this feat Smith and band have pulled off feels unreal. Maybe that’s how he wanted it. Maybe we’ve all been asleep for the 35 years that have passed since Disintegration came out. That was one crazy dream we had between 1989 and 2024, wasn’t it?

#27 on the 2024 Bacon Top 31 — Fontaines D.C.

Romance by Fontaines D.C.

Fontaines D.C. have managed a feat very few other bands have: they’ve released four albums as a band, and all four of those albums have been on the Bacon Top 31: their debut, Too Real was #26 in 2019, A Hero’s Death was #12 in 2020, and Skinty Fia came in at #20 in 2022. Their fantastic fourth album, Romance, is coming in at #27 here in 2024. That’s an impressive run of great albums.

Romance feels different from the band’s past post-punk efforts. This album is darker, more The Cure-like, with a little more force behind it, reminding me of Clinic’s 25-year-old (!) album Internal Wrangler. There’s still Grian Chatten’s Irish-accented, more sung-than-spoken lead vocals, and the four other members building out the music. But there’s more depth to the songwriting that didn’t used to be there. Hit play on the video above, for their song “Starburster.” The monotone verses that lead into the deep-breath chorus immediately puts you on edge. Then at the bridge of the song, you’ll hear Chatten channeling his best Damon Albarn.

These are all positive shifts in the music from Fontaines, but let’s also talk about the videos. “Starburster” above is a strange, alien mystery of a narrative. Chatten uses an inhaler to fill in on the song’s deep-breath choruses, and the story shifts at each breath. Crazy makeup and costumes abound, all in an off-kilter way that makes you feel uneasy. Then there’s the video for “Here’s the Thing,” which features a girl mocked for her high-school talent-show riverdance set who then finds a supernatural girl group to enact revenge on the mockers.

The craziest video is for the song “In the Modern World.” Ewan Mitchell, aka Game of Thrones’ Aemond Targaryen, takes center stage, as a low-life who engages in non-sactioned car-jitsu in public settings. Pretty sure you won’t know what car-jitsu is any more than I did, so watch the video and you’ll get a sense for it. Yes, it’s a real sport. And yes, it’s ridiculous.

The most “normal” video of the bunch is for the song “Favourite,” which leans heavily on old home video footage from the band members’ families, jumping around in the band’s history from birth to now. It actually feels kinda pleasant, especially when compared to the other three videos.

I’m loving this shift in musical direction for Fontaines D.C., and I’m not the only one: KEXP listeners voted Romance as the #1 album of 2024. While I can’t make it number one, it does speak to the strength of the music that came out this year that I’m only able to put it in at #27, through no fault of Romance. Give it a listen, even if you haven’t liked Fontaines in the past. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Radical Romantics by Fever Ray

Welcome to the Top 10 albums of 2023. This is where things really get fun for me, thinking about the albums from the year that I had the most trouble putting down, and what they mean to me and place they occupy in my life.

Fever Ray is the moniker under which Karin Dreijer – half of the groundbreaking electronic duo The Knife – performs, and seeing them appear here in 2023 should not be any surprise. The Knife’s Shaking the Habitual was #29 back in 2013, and both of Dreijer’s earlier Fever Ray releases have appeared on the Top 31 (#18 in 2009 and #21 in 2017). I am always picking up what they’re laying down.

Dreijer, and their nom de plume, Fever Ray, are unlike anything else I currently listen to. In my younger, gothier days I’d cycle through The Cure, Bauhaus, Siouxsie, and the like, and while all of those bands had a particular look to them – liked to wear dark makeup and do funny things with their hair – I would never have said any of them were “in costume.” My days-away from 50-year-old wants to call Fever Ray “goth,” but there’s something more to it. Dreijer and their Fever Ray bandmates are 100% “in costume,” all the time. On the cover to their phenomenal third album, Radical Romantics, Dreijer has a bald cap on, a ringed mane of long thin white hair, and elaborate makeup that would make them a shoe-in for the Ghost of Christmas Past in a revival of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Radical Romantics is Dreijer’s best album since The Knife’s Silent Shout, which came out back in 2006 (better than the two previous Fever Ray albums, and way better than The Knife’s final album, Shaking the Habitual, from 2013). The additional help Dreijer brought onto Romantics likely has something to do with it. In addition to roping in their brother Olof (aka the other half of The Knife) for four songs, Fever Ray also collaborated with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the Oscar-winning and Grammy-winning duo behind the soundtracks to 2010’s The Social Network and 2013’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (that’s not to mention Reznor’s other gig) on two songs. You can watch videos for both of those Reznor / Ross songs. The first is featured above, called “Even it Out,” and even shows Reznor and Ross performing within. There are some definite Reznor-like sounds flowing through the song. The other is “North,” a more subdued affair, with similar production to the duo’s soundtrack work. Obviously, Dreijer’s work without the help is great, too (the albums wouldn’t appear here on the Top 31 if I didn’t think so). But when 60% of the songs on the album are essentially The Knife songs or tangential Nine Inch Nails songs, there really is no comparison.

You can watch a couple other videos the band has released from the album: “Kandy” and my favorite track from the album, the opener, “What They Call Us.”

I had the immense pleasure of seeing Fever Ray perform live in November, and it was everything I want out of a live show. Theatrics, costumes, dance routines and throbbing bass make for one hell of an experience. Just last week Fever Ray released a live performance video created for ARTE.tv (“the European Culture Channel”) concert series “Passengers,” called Les Hauts Fourneaux d'Uckange (in English, The Blast Furnaces of Uckange) — an hour-long, extremely well-produced film showing the band perform in an abandoned factory in northern France. I encourage you to watch the performance, as it is nearly 1:1 of what I saw back in November, right down to Dreijer’s deathly makeup, their David-Byrne inspired big suit, and the light-up cloud headpiece worn by the keyboardist. Watching them perform, you’ll start to understand what is so magical about Dreijer and the band.

Radical Romantics is eerie, intense, brooding, and it seeps into every one of your orifices like a thick fog. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

#31 on the 2023 Bacon Top 31 — Jacknife Lee, Budgie & Lol Tolhurst

Fifteen years! That’s how long I’ve been tracking my Top 31 albums by year. 15 years honestly doesn’t feel that long. When I started examining, categorizing, and logging what had formed my listening habits across the previous 12 months, I was 35 years years young. By the time I’m done reviewing the albums that shaped my 2023, I’ll be 50.

The little imposter syndrome voice in the back of my head says opinions on current music from a 50-year-old are less relevant now than they would have been 15 years ago. But I also know that the Bacon Review audience is special (you’re special!). Most of you have been following the Top 31 for years, your musical tastes growing older alongside my own. I do strive to push my own listening boundaries ever outward, and I am able to bring my fifty years of listening experience to more easily see the differences and similarities I hear in new music. Having an ever-expanding library of reference points is key to the enjoyment of new music here at The Bacon Review.

The music of 2023 continued its march into new and uncharted territory. But as you’ll see as the Top 31 unfolds, new music by past Top 31 bands proved to be the mainstay in my speakers. A quick count on the expected 2023 Top 31 has only 11 or 12 new-to-the-Bacon Review artists. That’s just under half of the new albums that will be featured over the next month. It feels like an imbalance to me, but I haven’t done a comparison to past Top 31s – maybe they’ve all been like that, or maybe there’s been a natural slow decline in new artists featured as the Top 31 gets older and the list of featured artists grows longer. There’s probably some mathematic principle that refers to the decline of new elements introduced to an annually-recurring list phenomenon. If you know what that phenomenon is called, please let me know.

Let’s get on with it, shall we?

Los Angeles by Jacknife Lee, Budgie & Lol Tolhurst

We’ll be starting the 2023 Top 31 off with an album from a handful of names you likely don’t recognize, but whose instrumentation you most definitely have heard before. Garret “Jacknife” Lee is an electronic artist who has been producing albums for U2, Bloc Party, Crystal Castles, The Editors, and even R.E.M.’s final studio album, Collapse Into Now (#30 in 2010). Peter Clarke, aka “Budgie,” is best known as the drummer for Siouxsie & the Banshees. And finally, Laurence "Lol" Tolhurst was the founding drummer for The Cure (he was asked to leave after Disintegration due to increasing complications from his alcoholism). Kevin Haskins, the drummer for Bauhaus, was originally in the project but had to bail early for a Bauhaus reunion tour, forever robbing the resulting album of ever achieving its full gothic glory.

Tolhurst and Budgie met while touring with Siouxsie and The Cure way back in 1979, and Los Angeles marks the first official songs they’ve created together as well as being their each of their solo debuts. Lee got involved in production on the album when Haskins left the project and the remaining drummers were feeling their work was too steeped in their gothic past. Starting anew in 2019, the trio wrote a suite of distinctly non-gothic instrumental tracks as the foundation for their budding album. The “band” was still trying to sort out what the songs would be when the pandemic hit in March 2020.

A couple of the tracks ended up in the hands of James Murphy (of LCD Soundsystem), who agreed to write lyrics and sing on the album. From there, the trio brought in a number of big names: the Edge (U2 guitarist), Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream’s singer), and Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse’s singer). Joe Talbot from Idles was even going to appear on the album, but had to back out due to conflicting schedules. The resulting Los Angeles album feels a bit scattered in places, given the distinct vocal stylings of the singers who ended up performing on the record. But if you love Murphy, Gillespie, or Brock, I highly recommend checking out the album.

#13 on the 2022 Bacon Top 31 — Plains

I Walked with You a Ways by Plains

When you want a new Waxahatchee (#1 in 2020) album but can’t have a new Waxahatchee album, having an album that Waxahatchee, aka Katie Crutchfield, sings beautiful duets with another lovely voice, that of Jess Williamson, is more than enough to tide you over. Together, Crutchfield and Williamson become Plains, a couple of southern belles with hearts of gold, setting aside their indie-rock roots to dive deeper into their countryfied pasts.

Plains harkens back to those halcyon days of popular country music. Long before mainstream country found their post-9/11 conservative and nationalist voice, the mass, approachable appeal of 90s country reigned high. My own countryfied past is eating it up. I grew up in Oklahoma, and while my family listened to classic rock in my younger days, when I started finding my own musical tastes, I was heavily influenced by the juke box at my local Pizza Hut. The Cure next to Garth Brooks. Guns N Roses alongside Mary Chapin Carpenter. Boys II Men paired with Dwight Yoakam. It was a magical, cross-genre landscape (with a distinct lack of hip hop) that introduced me to much more music than I would have heard in my little KMOD 97.5 FM bubble. There are lots of things I’d rather not remember from my Oklahoma past. Singing Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, and Reba McEntire songs loudly while driving the backroads of suburban Tulsa in my beater Chevy is not something I’ll ever forget.

The video for “Hurricane,” shown above, brings back the Glamour-shot visuals of those days as well. It is truly a joy to listen to as well as watch. Two other videos have been put out by the duo, one for the unbelievably catchy “Abilene,” and another for the equally great “Problem With It.”

Earlier in 2022, Katie Crutchfield gave us a hint of where she was heading with Plains before we even knew that Plains existed: she performed a duet with one of her idols, Wynonna Judd, one-half of one of the most successful country acts of all time, The Judds. Judd and Crutchfield wrote and performed a new song together, “Other Side,” and its probably a little too country for my current tastes. But Crutchfield’s voice… sigh.

This isn’t the last country-ish album that will be featured on the 2022 Bacon Top 31, but it’s the most country of them all. Crutchfield and Williamson gave us something we didn’t know we needed, and it is perfect.

#13 on the 2020 Bacon Top 31 — Gorillaz

Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez by Gorillaz

Damon Albarn is a musical chameleon. He got his start with Blur in the early 90s (whose 8th album The Magic Whip was on the Top 31 at #21 in 2015). He’s also appeared on the Top 31 with The Good, The Bad and the Queen (#23 in 2018). And what started as a side project in 2005, Gorillaz has lately become Albarn’s main gig. The band’s seventh album, Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez appears here at #13 for 2020.

I’d lost interest in Gorillaz, despite my ongoing love for Albarn’s music. I haven’t loved anything he’s done with Gorillaz since their 2005 Danger Mouse-produced sophomore album Demon Days, and consequently the four albums prior to Song Machine that were released between 2010 and 2018 did not make the Top 31 cut. I’m glad that 2020 saw the release of another great Gorillaz album.

For those of you living under a rock, Gorillaz is a “virtual” band, with four fictional animated characters illustrated by Tank Girl-creator Jamie Hewlett. Musically, the band’s songs are principally created by Albarn, with a large collection of support characters and guest stars coming in to flesh things out. Since 2016, the band’s song creation duties have been shared with a third member of the band, Remi Kabaka Jr., who mans the lead percussion and produces the songs. Together they create a wide variety of digitally-created music with Albarn taking the lead on vocals, often singing with guest starts.

Song Machine started at the beginning of 2020 as a web-only music video series, a collection of singles released monthly with guest stars appearing on each song. There was no intention of releasing the songs as a full album. But, much like all the other plans launched in the first couple months of 2020, things changed. And we’re all the better for it.

The guest stars on Song Machine, Season One are what propelled this album into a prominent spot of my 2020 playlist. Robert Smith, Beck, St. Vincent, Elton John, and Peter Hook (among many many others) appear on the album. Not only do they lend their voices to these songs, but the songs they appear on shift tonally to the range that these voices are known for. So the album often sounds less like a Gorillaz album, and more like a movie soundtrack filled with great pop songs.

The album is very easy to love. Even if you’ve not been a fan in the past, I recommend checking it out. You just may surprise yourself.

#15 on the 2020 Bacon Top 31 — Nation of Language

Introduction, Presence by Nation of Language

Throughout 2020, when I wanted to listen to something released in 2020, but be swept back to the simpler emo/goth days of the late 20th century, Brooklyn’s Nation of Language would be there for me. If I were to play their fantastic debut album, Introduction, Presence, for you, and I didn’t tell you who it was, I fully believe you’d wrinkle your brow and say, tentatively, “is this… Joy Division?” or “…Depeche Mode?” or “…The Cure?” depending on the song I put on. Yes, the band’s impersonation of our synth-pop heroes from the 80s and 90s is really that good.

No, I haven’t put any eyeliner on while listening to them, but lord I hope the kids are (please, somebody with a connection to teens or 20-somethings, gather intel and report back). The trio, Ian Richard Devaney on vocals, guitar, percussion; Aidan Noell on synth and background vocals; and Michael Sue-Poi on bass; started on their pilgrimage to another era back in 2016. Since then they’ve released amazing single after amazing single, slowly building up enough songs to compile it into this lovely debut album.

Introduction, Presence doesn’t really have a breakaway hit for me to point you to. Rather, the feeling the album evokes is an entire world I wish I could go back to. I know I’m being exceedingly glib about the late twentieth century (hello white privilege!) but it’s less of an era and more of a younger age sort of longing. The freedom, lack of responsibility, and excess amount of disposable income that comes with youth is what this music reminds me of. But that’s also a great reality check, as I put it on the page. Yes, life was different then. But I also didn’t have my son, who is twelve now. Or my daughter, who is three. Or my lovely wife, who is… not three. Listening to Nation of Language allows me to think of that previous life fondly, and to spread that joy around my currently life. Give it a listen, as I know you’ll find that joy, too.

#25 on the 2017 Bacon Top 31

CCFX EP by CCFX

The band at #25 represents the first “new” band on this year’s list. CCFX are the combination of two Olympia bands (neither of whom I was familiar with before writing this line) CC Dust and Trans FX, but they don’t sound like they’re from the Pacific Northwest. They do sound like they’re from another era.

This is a continuation of where The Cure or the Cocteau Twins (good Cure and good Cocteau Twins) left off a few decades ago. You’ll recognize it immediately in the jangly guitars and the warbly, buttery vocals from frontwoman Mary Jane Dunphe. Unfortunately, the band has only this four song EP to their name, for now.

The above song, “The One to Wait”, is the shining highlight. This song is SO good. Please give it a listen by clicking play, above. I’ve listened to this song nearly every day since I first heard it a couple months ago. There are other good songs on the EP as well — “Venetian Screens” is almost as good as “The One to Wait.” And while the EP only has four songs, it leaves me hopeful that CCFX will go on to produce a fantastic debut album in the coming year.
